Continuous image distortion by astrophysical thick lenses
Image distortion due to weak gravitational lensing is examined using a
non-perturbative method of integrating the geodesic deviation and optical
scalar equations along the null geodesics connecting the observer to a distant
source. The method we develop continuously changes the shape of the pencil of
rays from the source to the observer with no reference to lens planes in
astrophysically relevant scenarios. We compare the projected area and the ratio
of semi-major to semi-minor axes of the observed elliptical image shape for
circular sources from the continuous, thick-lens method with the commonly
assumed thin-lens approximation. We find that for truncated singular isothermal
sphere and NFW models of realistic galaxy clusters, the commonly used thin-lens
approximation is accurate to better than 1 part in 10^4 in predicting the image
area and axes ratios. For asymmetric thick lenses consisting of two massive
clusters separated along the line of sight in redshift up to \Delta z = 0.2, we
find that modeling the image distortion as two clusters in a single lens plane
does not produce relative errors in image area or axes ratio more than 0.5%Comment: accepted to GR
Iterative Approach to Gravitational Lensing Theory
We develop an iterative approach to gravitational lensing theory based on
approximate solutions of the null geodesic equations. The approach can be
employed in any space-time which is ``close'' to a space-time in which the null
geodesic equations can be completely integrated, such as Minkowski space-time,
Robertson-Walker cosmologies, or Schwarzschild-Kerr geometries. To illustrate
the method, we construct the iterative gravitational lens equations and time of
arrival equation for a single Schwarzschild lens. This example motivates a
discussion of the relationship between the iterative approach, the standard
thin lens formulation, and an exact formulation of gravitational lensing.Comment: 27 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys.Rev.D, minor revisions, new

Final Analysis and Results of the Phase II SIMPLE Dark Matter Search
We report the final results of the Phase II SIMPLE measurements, comprising
two run stages of 15 superheated droplet detectors each, the second stage
including an improved neutron shielding. The analyses includes a refined signal
analysis, and revised nucleation efficiency based on reanalysis of
previously-reported monochromatic neutron irradiations. The combined results
yield a contour minimum of \sigma_{p} = 4.2 x 10^-3 pb at 35 GeV/c^2 on the
spin-dependent sector of WIMP-proton interactions, the most restrictive to date
from a direct search experiment and overlapping for the first time results
previously obtained only indirectly. In the spin-independent sector, a minimum
of 3.6 x 10^-6 pb at 35 GeV/c^2 is achieved, with the exclusion contour
challenging the recent CoGeNT region of current interest.Comment: revised, PRL-accepted version with slightly weakened limit contour
String Field Theory Projectors for Fermions of Integral Weight
The interaction vertex for a fermionic first order system of weights (1,0)
such as the twisted bc-system, the fermionic part of N=2 string field theory
and the auxiliary \eta\xi system of N=1 strings is formulated in the Moyal
basis. In this basis, the Neumann matrices are diagonal; as usual, the
eigenvectors are labeled by \kappa\in\R. Oscillators constructed from these
eigenvectors make up two Clifford algebras for each nonzero value of \kappa.
Using a generalization of the Moyal-Weyl map to the fermionic case, we classify
all projectors of the star-algebra which factorize into projectors for each
\kappa-subspace. At least for the case of squeezed states we recover the full
set of bosonic projectors with this property. Among the subclass of ghost
number-homogeneous squeezed state projectors, we find a single class of
BPZ-real states parametrized by one (nearly) arbitrary function of \kappa. This
class is shown to contain the generalized butterfly states. Furthermore, we
elaborate on sufficient and necessary conditions which have to be fulfilled by
our projectors in order to constitute surface states. As a byproduct we find
that the full star product of N=2 string field theory translates into a
canonically normalized continuous tensor product of Moyal-Weyl products up to
an overall normalization. The divergent factors arising from the translation to
the continuous basis cancel between bosons and fermions in any even dimension.Comment: LaTeX, 1+23 pages, minor improvements, references adde
Time-Resolved Measurement of Interatomic Coulombic Decay in Ne_2
The lifetime of interatomic Coulombic decay (ICD) [L. S. Cederbaum et al.,
Phys. Rev. Lett. 79, 4778 (1997)] in Ne_2 is determined via an extreme
ultraviolet pump-probe experiment at the Free-Electron Laser in Hamburg. The
pump pulse creates a 2s inner-shell vacancy in one of the two Ne atoms,
whereupon the ionized dimer undergoes ICD resulting in a repulsive
Ne^{+}(2p^{-1}) - Ne^{+}(2p^{-1}) state, which is probed with a second pulse,
removing a further electron. The yield of coincident Ne^{+} - Ne^{2+} pairs is
recorded as a function of the pump-probe delay, allowing us to deduce the ICD
lifetime of the Ne_{2}^{+}(2s^{-1}) state to be (150 +/- 50) fs in agreement
with quantum calculations.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted by PRL on July 11th, 201
Orientation Dependence of the Ionization of CO and NO in an Intense Femtosecond Two-Color Laser Field
Two-color (800- and 400-nm) short (45-fs) linearly polarized pulses are used to ionize and dissociate CO and NO. The emission of Cq+, Nq+, and O⁺ fragments indicates that the higher ionization rate occurs when the peak electric field points from C to O in CO and from N to O in NO. This preferred direction is in agreement with that predicted by Stark-corrected strong-field-approximation calculations
On surface states and star-subalgebras in string field theory
We elaborate on the relations between surface states and squeezed states.
First, we investigate two different criteria for determining whether a matter
sector squeezed state is also a surface state and show that the two criteria
are equivalent. Then, we derive similar criteria for the ghost sector. Next, we
refine the criterion for determining whether a surface state is in
H_{\kappa^2}, the subalgebra of squeezed states obeying [S,K_1^2]=0. This
enables us to find all the surface states of the H_{\kappa^2} subalgebra, and
show that it consists only of wedge states and (hybrid) butterflies. Finally,
we investigate generalizations of this criterion and find an infinite family of
surface states subalgebras, whose surfaces are described using a "generalized
Schwarz-Christoffel" mapping.Comment: 38 pages, 6 figures, JHEP style; typos corrected, ref. adde
A common neural system mediating two different forms of social judgement
Background: A wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions, including schizophrenia and autistic spectrum disorder (ASD), are associated with impairments in social function. Previous studies have shown that individuals with schizophrenia and ASD have deficits in making a wide range of social judgements from faces, including decisions related to threat (such as judgements of approachability) and decisions not related to physical threat (such as judgements of intelligence). We have investigated healthy control participants to see whether there is a common neural system activated during such social decisions, on the basis that deficits in this system may contribute to the impairments seen in these disorders. Method: We investigated the neural basis of social decision making during judgements of approachability and intelligence from faces in 24 healthy participants using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We used conjunction analysis to identify common brain regions activated during both tasks. Results: Activation of the amygdala, medial prefrontal cortex, inferior prefrontal cortex and cerebellum was seen during performance of both social tasks, compared to simple gender judgements from the same stimuli. Task-specific activations were present in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in the intelligence task and in the inferior and middle temporal cortex in the approachability task. Conclusions: The present study identified a common network of brain regions activated during the performance of two different forms of social judgement from faces. Dysfunction of this network is likely to contribute to the broad-ranging deficits in social function seen in psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and ASD
